I Traveled During A Pandemic and here's What I Noticed

Last month, I took an impromptu trip to Mexico. With all this madness going on for the past 6 months, I felt like I was ready to take a getaway. Not dismissing the fact that a pandemic exists. Of course, I was careful and took the necessary precautions. Some people I know told me that they wouldn’t do international travel anytime soon, only domestic, and they will resume international next year. My question is always “what’s the difference?”.

Will Covid disappear next year? What’s the difference with destination before domestic or international if you still will be getting on a plane?

I do firmly believe that everyone should do what they feel most comfortable doing. Here is what I noticed traveling.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but, Covid isn’t going anywhere.

AIRPORT

One of the busiest airports, JFK’s international terminal is a complete ghost town. It’s terrifying to see how many businesses are out of work throughout this pandemic. I do not believe JFK airport is taking the necessary precautions at the moment. I didn’t see any cleaning or even hand sanitizer whatsoever.

AIRLINES

I flew Delta airlines roundtrip and here is what I noticed:

  • They are blocking all middle seats. This is a great step for reducing the spread even though the aisle and window seats aren’t 6-feet away. It also adds more comfort.

  • As you board they provide you with sanitizing wipes to disinfect your area.

  • There was no food being served, only snacks. There weren’t any beverages either, only nasty Dasani water.

OTHER COUNTRIES

I traveled to Mexico and I must say that they are doing a way better at handling this situation. On arrival in the airport, you can see workers with jetpacks spraying disinfectant as another wipes the common places that people touch. This was non-existent in the United States.

When I arrived in Cabo, hand sanitizer is always in arm’s reach and there are many wash stations set up throughout the streets. Every place I entered checked my temperature and required me to wash my hands before entering, in addition to me wearing a mask of course.

A lot has changed due to the pandemic, some countries are handling it better than others and it shows.
